Firelands

The Firelands Wine label is our namesake. Wine under this label are made with the Vitas Vinifera species of grapes. These grapes are native in the Mediterranean region, Central Europe, and southwestern Asia, from Morocco and Portugal north to southern Germany and east to northern Iran. More commonly, Vitas Vinifera make drier style wines such as Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Grigio, Pinot Noir, and Riesling, to name a few. Firelands Winery was the first winery in the state to plant Pinot Grigio grapes. We are very proud to bring these fine, dry wines to our area.

Mon Ami

George Loeb began construction on Mon Ami Winery in the 1850’s but was temporarily halted during the Civil War in 1861, when it was used for a prison/holding cell for Confederate Soldiers in it’s lower level. It was completed in 1872, and the winemaking History of Mon Ami began in 1873 when a cooperation of grape growers and vintners established Catawba Island Wine Company. While Prohibition saw the closing of many Ohio wineries, Mon Ami survived by producing and selling altar wine. Generating 130,000 gallons of wine, the estate was purchased by Mon Ami Champagne Company in 1937, one of the few American wineries producing the finest champagne. In 1945 a fire destroyed its upper rooms, and it was after then that it was made into a Restaurant. When the Winery ceased making wine, Firelands Winery became the Advocate for them, purchasing the brand, and has been making their wines ever since. The entire line of Mon Ami wines is available in our Firelands Winery Tasting Room to purchase & a selection always available to sample. The History lives on with our bottlings of Mon Ami Wines.

Lonz
Our Lonz Brand reflects the History of the winery located on Middle Bass Island that dates back to the 1860’s, when the winery was thriving. Andrew Wehrle operated the Golden Eagle Winery, at one time the largest wine producer of wine in the United States. George Lonz, dubbed “Ohio’s Wine King”, ran the winery for most of the 20th Century until his death in 1969. Paramount Distillers owned the winery at the time of its collapse in 2000, and Firelands stepped in to buy the brand & continue its legacy, making the wines Inland here at Firelands winery. Lonz Winery sat empty until its re-opening, not as a winery, but as Middle Bass Island State Park in 2017, with the iconic copper topped Observatory Tower still standing as the centerpiece of the Park. We pay homage to the Lonz Winery History, producing American varieties, favorites of customers near and far.

Mantey
For nearly a century, Mantey Vineyards produced fine Ohio wine. In 1880, Edward Mantey moved from Kelley’s Island to a small fruit farm in Venice, Ohio. The growing of grapes and production of wine was becoming a thriving business on the south shore of Lake Erie. The climate and soil produced excellent wine grapes, and the growing immigrant population from wine producing countries provided a good market. A sizable part of Edward Mantey’s farm was allotted to grapes. These were converted into wine and for the most part sold locally. Gradually fame of Mantey’s wine spread over a wide area and an active business was carried out between Pittsburgh and Chicago. Edward Mantey’s two sons became interested in the production of these fine wines, and joined their father’s business, which had grown from producing a few thousand to over 50,000 gallons of wine a year. We still produce several of the original wines that are sold in our tasting room and throughout the Midwest.
